Magic Slim, one of the last survivors of the post-World War II Chicago blues explosion, died Wednesday in a Philadelphia, Pa., hospital. He was 75. He was hospitalized last month for respiratory problems, bleeding ulcers and other complications. Magic Slim was the direct descendant of the late Magic Sam, the 1950s bluesman under whom he informally apprenticed.  Magic Slim had the raw, driving guitar style that developed after the war in Chicago with artists like Muddy Waters, Otis Rush and Pat Hare.
He spent most of his life recording and touring. Like many blues artists, he became particularly popular in Europe, but he was a regular on the festival circuit around the world. Born in Torrance, Miss., he first played the piano. But he lost a little finger in a cotton gin accident at 14, which made the piano too difficult, and he switched to guitar.
He left Mississippi for Chicago in 1955, but felt overwhelmed by the musical competition there and returned to Mississippi, where he played for another five years before making a second run at Chicago. He stayed the second time and eventually put together a band, the Teardrops, with which he played for the rest of his career. He recorded a series of singles in the 1960s and 30 albums for labels like Alligator and Blind Pig. His final album came out last year. He won six W.C. Handy Blues Awards over the years. In 2011, Mississippi erected a sign on its blues trail to mark the spot in Grenada where his mother ran a restaurant.
