Conhecida entre 1800 e 1900 como a New York do Texas, Galveston é uma 'ilha' à margem do Caribe americano, no fundo do Golfo do México. Localizada a leste da belísima Corpus Christi, tem cerca de 60 mil habitantes. Esta pérola histórica parece escolhida pelo Furacão Ike para receber como prêmio 200km/h de ventos, ondas e enchentes. Winds will be from the northeast at 25-35 mph with higher gusts Increasing winds this afternoon with a few squalls. Expect high temperatures in the upper-80's. Tonight, we should see cloudy skies and hurricane force winds. Expect northeast winds of 75-95 mph with gusts to 105-mph, switching to northwest and then becoming southerly. Overnight lows will be . On Saturday, we will have cloudy skies with heavy rain and hurricane conditions early, slowly abating during the day. Highs will be in the mid-80's. We will have south to southwest winds of 45-65 mph early, decreasing to 20-25 mph with 50-mph gusts during the afternoon. Category 2 Hurricane Ike is moving west-northwest on a path that is now projected to take the large storm ashore over Galveston Island, giving the area a direct strike. Moreover the storm has potential to become a major hurricane prior to landfall. At 7 a.m. EDT, Ike was located near 26.9 N and 92.2 W. Ike was moving west-northwest at 13-mph and should continue on that path with a turn to the north expected just prior to landfall. The hurricane had sustained winds of 100-mph and a central pressure of 953 MB (28.14").
